چکیده

Recently a novel crosslinkable and biodegradable copolymer poly(propylene fumarateco-caprolactone) (PPF-co-PCL) has been synthesized in our lab (Figure 1). By varying copolymer composition, controllable physical properties can be achieved to satisfy various needs in tissue engineering, particularly, bone and nerve regenerations. The physical properties of the copolymers have been extensively investigated and the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreases progressively with increasing the PCL composition. Therefore, the biodegradation rate and mechanical properties can be well modulated by the different molecular structure, copolymer composition, and crosslinking density.

Polymer Dynamics and Rheology in Designing and Understanding Polymeric Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications

Polymer dynamics is the essence of polymer physics. Understanding polymers from the perspective of polymer dynamics is crucial to rationally design and fabricate novel polymeric systems. Poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF) and poly(propylene fumarate)-copolycaprolactone (PPF-co-PCL) (Fig. 1) are two unsaturated linear polyesters that can be crosslinked through its fumarate double bonds. By varying t...

Studies on Poly(propylene fumarate-co-caprolactone diol) Thermoset Composites towards the Development of Biodegradable Bone Fixation Devices

The effect of reinforcement in the cross-linked poly(propylene fumarate-co-caprolactone diol) thermoset composites based on Kevlar fibres and hydroxyapatite was studied. Cross-linked poly(propylene fumarate-co-caprolactone diol) was also studied without any reinforcement for comparison. The reinforcing fibre acts as a barrier for the curing reaction leading to longer setting time and lesser cro...

Two novel methods for synthesizing poly (propylene fumarate): Technical aspects and role of vacuum and N2 purging effects

Poly (propylene fumarate) (PPF), a linear unsaturated polyester consisting of alternating propylene glycol and fumaric acid units, can be cured in vivo to fill the skeletal defects with minimal surgical intervention. Many different methods have been reported for synthesizing PPF, but none of them gives a clear method. The present paper introduces two new methods in PPF synthesis: Modified reflu...

Material Properties and Biocompatibility of Self-Crosslinkable Poly(caprolactone fumarate) copolymer as a Scaffold for Guided Tissue Regeneration

Introduction Many clinical situations require treatment options for bone defects. Biodegradable scaffolds that can be injected and crosslinked in situ to fill these defects offer attractive additions to existing methods [1]. Although biocompatible polymers that can be injected and crosslinked in situ have been developed for bone tissue engineering, a toxic crosslinking agent such as N-vinyl pyr...
